Telamon's FTP area

Get LZW Here

LZW is a utility developed by Telamon Inc. that archives and compresses HP 3000 files. It is similar in concept to PKZIP on the PC, or the TAR utility on UNIX.

We distribute HP 3000 files via FTP or WWW. These files have been compressed into a single file using LZW, so you need LZW on your system to decompress them. LZW is available in two forms:

  • As a WRQ LABELS formatted file
  • As a binary file
  • LZW in WRQ LABELS format

If you use the Reflection terminal emulator from WRQ, this is possibly the easiest way to get LZW.
    1. Download the LZW file to your PC. Save it to disk. Choose from
      1. lzw.mpeix.wrq for MPE/iX 4.0 and greater
      2. lzw.mpexl.wrq for pre MPE/XL 4.0
      3. lzw.mpev.wrq for MPE/V
    2. Upload the file from your PC to the HP 3000 using Reflection file transfer. Use the LABELS or IMAGE option (instead of ASCII or BINARY). This will create LZW as a program file that you can run on the HP 3000.
      1. Here is an example using the file transfer menu of Reflection 1 for Windows 95.
      2. You should also be able to use the Reflection Alt-Y command line to start the file transfer. One of these two commands should do the trick, depending on your version of Reflection:
        send lzw.mpeix to lzw.pub image
        send lzw.mpeix to lzw.pub;l

    LZW in binary format

If you don't use Reflection, you can upload the binary directly to the HP 3000. You will have to ensure that the resulting HP 3000 file is a valid PROG (for MPE/V) or NMPRG (for MPE/iX) file.
    1. Download the LZW file to your PC. Save it to disk. Choose from
      1. lzw.mpeix for MPE/iX 4.0 and greater
      2. lzw.mpexl for pre MPE/XL 4.0
      3. lzw.mpev for MPE/V
    2. Upload the file from your PC to the HP 3000 using a binary transfer. For example, if you use command-line FTP, do two commands like this:
      >binary
      >put lzw.mpeix lzw.pub;rec=128,1,f,binary;code=NMPRG
